Aftercare Protocol

The 16-Week Maintenance Protocol.

What to do — and what to avoid — in the days, weeks, and months after a Diamond V6.0 treatment. Validated across 47 UK certified salons.

April 25, 2026·11 min read

A keratin treatment is not a one-day procedure. It's a 16-week chemical relationship.

The first 72 hours determine the outcome of the next 113 days. This protocol is what every Diamond V6.0 certified salon hands clients on the way out. Follow it and your treatment lasts the full clinical hold. Skip it and you'll see drop-off in week 4.

Phase 1 — The bonding window (first 72h)

The treatment is sealed under the flat iron, but molecular bonds continue to set for three full days. Anything that disrupts the cuticle disrupts the bond.

Do

  • Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase. Cotton creates micro-friction that breaks setting bonds.
  • Keep hair perfectly straight. No tucking behind ears, no headbands, no bobby pins, no ponytails.
  • Stay dry. No water, no sweat, no humidity above 70%.

Avoid

  • ×Washing or wetting hair (even a quick rinse).
  • ×Tying hair up in any form.
  • ×Wearing hats, scarves, or hoodies that compress the lengths.
  • ×Heavy steam — long showers, saunas, steam rooms.

If you break the 72-hour rule, the treatment may still work — but expect 20–40% reduction in hold duration.

Phase 2 — First wash & first month

After 72 hours, your hair is ready for water. The shampoo you use determines whether your treatment lasts 6 weeks or 16.

The non-negotiable rule

Sulphate-free, sodium-free.

Sulphates and sodium chloride strip the keratin bond at the cuticle level. A single wash with a sulphate shampoo removes weeks of clinical hold.

Wash technique

  • Lukewarm water (hot water opens the cuticle and accelerates wear).
  • Shampoo only the scalp, not the lengths. Lather drains down and cleans the lengths sufficiently.
  • Conditioner only on the lengths and ends.
  • Rinse for longer than feels necessary.

Drying & styling

  • Microfibre towel or cotton t-shirt — never terry-cloth.
  • Air-dry at least 70% before introducing heat.
  • Heat protection spray before any styling tool.

Phase 3 — Long-term (weeks 4–16)

Past the first month, the treatment is durable but not invincible. Three habits extend hold:

  • Weekly keratin-safe mask.

Replace conditioner with a keratin-safe mask once per week. Diamond Silk Mask is the in-system option.

  • Avoid “clarifying”.

Clarifying shampoos and apple cider vinegar rinses strip product buildup — and your keratin too.

  • Pool, sea, chlorine.

Wet hair with clean water before swimming. Apply leave-in as barrier. Rinse within 30 min. Wash with sulphate-free shampoo same day. Frequent swimmers (3+/week) average 10–12 weeks of hold instead of 16.

The Data

15.8

Weeks of clinical hold
(followed protocol)

7.2

Weeks of clinical hold
(broke sulphate rule)

The single largest determinant of treatment longevity is shampoo choice — not hair type, not frequency of washing.

Schedule for week 14–16

Before drop-off becomes visible. A maintenance Diamond Alignment extends total wear to 28–32 continuous weeks.
